Congaree Park weekend scene

Weekend itinerary

Two Nights in Columbia and One Congaree Forest Day

Arrive in Columbia Friday, walk Congaree's Boardwalk Loop in Saturday's cooler hours, and reserve Sunday for a prearranged Cedar Creek paddle or an easy breakfast before the drive home.

By Cal Mercer — a Second Star Guide itinerary

Walk the Boardwalk Loop first. Add a natural trail only after checking heat, flooding, storm damage, mosquitoes, and current NPS trail notices.

Best length

2 nights

Two nights allow one unhurried boardwalk-and-trail day plus a separate Sunday paddle option without making either outing compete with the drive.

Stay

Hampton Inn & Suites Columbia/Southeast-Ft. Jackson

Southeast Columbia and Fort Jackson hotel on the park side of the metro; compare it when a shorter Bluff Road…

Main activity

Boardwalk Loop

Walk the Boardwalk Loop first, then decide whether current conditions justify Weston Lake or a separately planned Cedar Creek outing.

Pace

One forest day, one optional paddle

Best for travelers who want the Boardwalk Loop, one condition-dependent add-on, a packed lunch, and Columbia as a practical overnight base.

Friday

Check into Columbia, eat, and pack Saturday's water and lunch.

Friday should remove decisions from the park morning: settle into the hotel, choose dinner nearby, fill water bottles, and put bug spray, rain protection, snacks, and the current trail map in the day bag.

Saturday

Walk the Boardwalk Loop before the heat and trail miles build.

Begin at the Harry Hampton Visitor Center and Boardwalk Loop. Add Weston Lake only if the trail is open, conditions are manageable, and the group still wants natural-surface miles after the boardwalk.

4:30 PM

Afternoon

Return to Columbia before the humid day turns into a grind.

After the boardwalk and any trail add-on, head back for dry clothes, a shower, and dinner. Cedar Creek deserves its own outing rather than a tired late-day improvisation.

Sunday

Paddle Cedar Creek only when the outing is already arranged.

Use Sunday for a reserved or self-supported Cedar Creek outing when water levels, weather, equipment, and launch timing all line up. Otherwise choose breakfast in Columbia and leave without inventing a second park day.
